Shawn Byrne, a dedicated professional with an extensive background in law enforcement, has been actively involved with the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics since 1992. His journey began by assisting his father, a retired Oklahoma City Police Captain, with their department’s Golf Tournament. After joining the Oklahoma City Police Department in 2002, Shawn continued his commitment to LETR through various fundraising activities. Over his 21-year career, culminating in his retirement in February 2023, Shawn held numerous roles, including serving on the LETR International Executive Council as an at-large member. He contributed significantly to the Training and Communications Committee and has been part of five Final Legs, participating in roles ranging from runner to documentation team member. His exemplary service earned him the John Carion Unsung Hero Award in 2015.
Beyond his LETR involvement, Shawn now serves as the Manager, Digital and Social Engagement for Special Olympics International. He is also a unified partner for Golf in Oklahoma. Academically, Shawn holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Oklahoma City University and is a CLEET-certified advanced instructor with a CIT certification. His professional experience is marked by a profound dedication to Special Olympics and a legacy of service in law enforcement and community engagement.
