Special Olympics unleashes the potential of people with intellectual disabilities through the power of sport. As a LETR volunteer, you will become an essential part of this movement. You have the opportunity to create positive change in your local community and across the globe. But to do that, you need to find your WHY.
Finding your WHY means discovering your purpose and passion as a LETR volunteer. It means understanding what motivates you, what inspires you, and what makes you happy. It means connecting your values and goals with the mission and vision of Special Olympics. It means finding WHY you give your time, energy, and resources to this cause.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics welcomes participants from all levels of law enforcement and public safety staff, with and without policing power, across the globe.
- Local Law Enforcement –refers to public safety structure at the state, provincial, local, or municipal level (i.e. Illinois State Police, Polizia di Stato)
- Federal or National – refers to public safety structure at a national or federal level of a country (i.e. Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Australian Federal Police, PDI, Carabineros,
- Military – refers to public safety division within a country’s military (i.e. Military Police Corps, U.S. Air Force Security Forces, Arma dei Carabinieri, Royal Australian Corps of Military Police, etc.)
- Correctional – refers to individuals who work in jails, reformatories, penitentiaries, courthouses, or with immigration or naturalization services. Their roles include overseeing, securing, and controlling arrested individuals awaiting trial or those convicted and incarcerated. (i.e. Correctional Officer, Detention Officer, Prison Officer, Polizia Penitenziaria, etc.)
What are you waiting for? Law enforcement officers interested in participating should contact their local Special Olympics Chapter to learn about engagement opportunities. If a Torch Run program is not active in your region, the LETR Executive Council is available to assist with initiating a program.
