Deputy Chief John Clifton is a seasoned law enforcement professional with a career starting at the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Department in Georgia. After ten years in patrol and investigations, he served as an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He later became Chief of Police for the cities of Porterdale and Forsyth, Georgia. In 2008, he joined the newly established Johns Creek Police Department, where he has been a key member since. DC Clifton holds a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from the University of Georgia, a Master’s in Public Administration from Columbus State University, and attended the FBI National Academy Session 248.
John has been involved with the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for 16 years. When Johns Creek Police was founded in 2008, John saw LETR as a great way to connect with the community. Since then, the department has raised over $850,000 for Georgia’s Special Olympics athletes, with a goal of reaching $1 million before John retires. He served as LETR Georgia State Director for five years and joined the LETR International Council in 2020, later being elected in 2022. In 2023, he was elected Chairman of the LETR International Executive Council, a role he finds both humbling and meaningful.
John’s family shares his commitment to LETR. His wife, Amy, and their two daughters have been active in the organization, with his youngest daughter, Bailey, competing as a Unified partner in soccer at the 2018 USA Games. In 2019, John helped create the North Fulton United soccer league, where athletes with intellectual disabilities and Unified partners play together. The league, which started small, now has over 150 athletes and partners, and the community’s support has been incredible.
