The concept behind the International Torch Run Alliance is a membership based network of Torch Runners and Torch Run supporters from around the world who wish to demonstrate their connection to LETR, have the ability to network and interact with other Torch Runners and stay up to date with information about Torch Run activities.
Remembering that this is still very much a 'Work in Progress', membership would open to a range of people with a connection to the Torch Run movement - Torch Runners, Special Olympics athletes and their families, Special Olympics staff members and Corporate Supporters.
The idea came about during a Final Leg in Canada in 2018. A group of Torch Runners were talking about the positive aspects of getting together with Torch Runners from other parts of the country and around the world and the concept of creating the network grew from there. Council member and Region Coordinator for Canada, Rick Lucy brought the idea to Council in January 2018 and approval was given for a Working Group to be formed. That work continues.
It's early days and plenty of the details are yet to worked out, but we are looking at partnerships with companies who might be prepared to offer loyalty discounts to Alliance members. In addition we are considering a range of items that would identify you as a member (lapel pins, car stickers etc). The biggest benefit though is that intangible one - the benefit of the network itself - providing members with the ability to connect with other Torch Runners from around the world whether it is just to share ideas and experiences or to meet up on your travels.
Our plan is to keep the costs of membership as low as possible, but we expect there will be a recurring annual fee. It is most likely going to be a recurring annual fee somewhere in the vicinity of 50 cents to $1.00 per week (US Dollars) but nothing has been decided yet - we still need to work through the costs of managing the systems and providing members with the level of service that would be expected before we can lock in a price point for membership.
